Mading Majok

Software Engineer — Software, Databases & Networking

I build practical software — web apps, backend systems, and the tools in between. I like understanding how things work end to end. Currently building JunubMart, a Django-powered marketplace for South Sudan.

About Me

From the land of the Nile, now learning and building in the highlands of Addis — a South Sudanese engineer in Ethiopia.

I write code, read literature, and explore philosophy and science. Programming gives me a way to build and solve problems; literature gives me a way to understand humanity, ideas, and different perspectives. Somewhere between the two, I continue to learn, build, question, and discover.

Every project is a chance to turn what I learn into something real, not simply to follow a tutorial and call it done. I learn by building, breaking, fixing, and understanding what happens along the way. I don't just want to know how something works — I want to understand why it works, and use that understanding to build something better.

Beyond Code

What I read when I'm not coding.

Outside programming, I read philosophy, history, and classic literature — Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, Dostoevsky, Dickens, Achebe, and others. Different books, different worlds, but the same curiosity: understanding people, ideas, power, decisions, and the circumstances that shape them.

"Read deeply. Think independently. Build deliberately."

I carry that same mindset into engineering. Whether I'm looking at a database, debugging a program, or dealing with a difficult problem, I want to understand what is happening before trying to change it. Literature reminds me that life, just like software, is rarely straightforward — most decisions are made with incomplete information, competing interests, and no perfect solution.
